Artist Biography:

Brendan Sullivan is an artist and designer currently studying medicine at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. Prior to medical school Brendan worked with MASS Design Group in Boston as a Design Associate and Design-Research Associate. Brendan’s design work was focused around a collaborative installation that aimed to draw attention to the current state of the American criminal justice system and give voice to the millions of incarcerated individuals within that system. His research on the other hand delved into the effects of architectural design on clinical outcomes in childbirth. In this role he collaborated with a team of architects and medical/public health professionals. Before working with MASS Design, Brendan spent three years at Gehry Technologies where he consulted on such projects as the Broad Museum in Los Angeles and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

Brendan holds a Masters of Architecture from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design––a background that Brendan believes will serve him well as a future physician or surgeon. As the neurosurgeon Henry Marsh said, surgery is a craft that is fifty percent visual and fifty percent tactile.
